PostSubject: Traven's History   Sun Nov 29, 2009 4:10 pm

Traven is one of three survivors of the Knights of the Deep, a fairly successful if little known adventuring / mercenary company that was located at Deepwatch Tower a few miles outside of Waterdeep. The Knights of the Deep earned their fame adventuring in Undermountain, clearing trade routes of bandits and destroying a warband of trolls that were terrorizing the countryside outside of Waterdeep.

At the height of their power, the Knights of the Deep numbered 14 members. Their downfall came when they received a request to investigate corruption amongst the Waterdeep Guards. After a short investigation, a skirmish broke out between some of the corrupt guardsmen and the Knights of the Deep. The Grey Hand (I think that is the group), the elite of Waterdeep joined the battle and sided with the corrupt guards. Of the 12 members of the Knights of the Deep present, only Traven escaped alive. Deepwatch Tower was then taken by the Waterdeep Guard as an outpost. The two members stationed there were gone when the guards arrived.

That was over a year prior to Traven joining the group. After the battle with the guard, Erebus helped hide Traven from the guard until things cooled down. In return for the help he received, Traven has been a sort of "free" mercenary, joining various groups Erebus knows of in need of some extra muscle.

When asked about his fighting style, Traven claims that he given a full education in magic and blade by the elves that raised him, but gives no further detail on what elves or where he was raised.

Very cool story. So we have a member who fought the Grey Hand? Holy crap! Since Travan has been in Undermountain before, maybe he knows some things that'll help us find the Axe of the Dwarven Lords? Mart, any chance there?

As a matter of fact...

Travan knows that there is a Taanaruk (Half-fiend Orc) chief somewhere in the 9th level of Undermountain that has a fetish for collecting powerful magic items, even if he can't use them. The Axe of Dwarven Lords would slaughter any Orc that tried to wield it. This Taanaruk may or may not know anything about the Axe, but to find out you would need to get through his considerably large and formidable tribe. No guarantees, but it's an option.

Now we just need to find a convenient elevator down to Level 9.

We could always find a deep ravine and do a little sprelunking down it to a lower level. Very Happy

So we just know that this orc loves magic items. Maybe he's heard of the Axe, or of the Rings of Mystra for that matter. We haven't even gotten past the first level of Undermountain yet so I don't know if we're going to be able to make it to him. Didn't some of us level last time? I have a feeling that I did. Gotta get my character sheet.

Anyone have Teleport yet? God that spell makes traveling so much easier. Wait, I think Keira has it, but she's a few levels higher than us.

Andreas has discovered that the orc is actually a half-fiend. I've got a demonbane bastard sword in case things go wrong but this presents a whole new host of issues:
1) half-fiends usually travel with both kinds (expect demons/devils in the picture)
2) I've never met a NICE half-fiend
3) They're usually more cunning/malicious than their non-fiend counterparts

We need to discover more about this bloke before we waltz into his domain in the 9th level of the Underdark. Plus, if he has the Axe of the Dwarven Lords, we have nothing at all nearly of value to trade with him. THAT means that we're going to have to kill him to take it. However, if he knows where it is (and then tells us for some strange reason), you can be sure he'll be gunning to steal it from us once we recover it. There's no possible way he'll say, "Oh you found it? Good for you boys! Enjoy it, ain't it a bute?"

I don't know if anyone will read this before our session today but I'll bring these points up at the table if need be.
